I like finding out of the way and remote places to visit that are not high on other peoples’ list. The fewer tourists, the better! Somehow I end up finding the cabin at the end of the dirt road leading into the jungle or a remote caye in the middle of the ocean. I can no longer feel good about being pampered in an expensive hotel and being segregated from the locals. I don’t want to relax by the pool and be handed drinks listening to other people talking about where they work and what they have and ‘how great this place is’. UGH!! I’d prefer a sweltering jungle looking for animals and finding a hidden waterfall to that any day.
I attempt to plan my vacations on a budget, although that doesn’t mean I stay at hostels all of the time. I do try to stay at small local places like a b&b or a cabin…support the people, not the ‘man’. Sometimes budget isn’t possible, such as Guyana. It could be if you have brought your own camping equipment and stay in the bush. However, I’m not into that. For the most part the lodges there are expensive, but they do provide meals and tours in the price. There are very few places there to stay so you have to be able to bend a little on the budget.
Now…off to the wild!
